Independent VNA Comparison Report

See how the Planar 304/1 Compares with Agilent E8364

The Penn State Applied Research Laboratory has provided an unsolicited, independent report on the measurement performance of the Planar 304/1 VNA compared with an Agilent E8364B PNA. Several tests were performed by the ARL, including basic performance tests with antennas (S11 parameters), filters, and amplifiers.

I bought the instrument for two main purposes. First is to have them fix installed in the accelerator to do all kinds of setting up and second is the cable measurements after installation. We transmit a nanosecond long pulses from the sensors over a few hundred meter long transmission lines and our application requires a very clean impulse response to limit the inter symbol interference. Therefore every cable is carefully measured before and after installation. So far we used a large Agilent PNA type analyzer with a mobile UPS. This is heavy like hell, especially when you have to carry it deep and far into the tunnel. The TR5048 is a true blessing for me!

Thanks for lending me the VNA for trial evaluation. I have used it to test passive RF components (698 to 2700 MHz) for insertion loss and return loss. I am very pleased with the performance of the Planar 304/1. The use of a laptop interface greatly speeds up the saving of screen plots that are needed for report purposes, and the pictures can be pasted to the word file directly. Also, the weight of the equipment is greatly reduced, which makes it portable to be easily hand-carried when travelling overseas.

The Copper Mountain analyzer even provides some other built in functionality that the Agilent analyzer does not have such as the additional RF filter statistics and the time domain analysis.
